Meet the Host and Her Ward(en)

Every gathering needs a Host.
Apparently, this one came with a Ward(en).

“Come in. Have a look around.
Don't worry—most people find their way back out.”

Together...

She opened the way.
He followed her through.
Neither of them remembers inviting you.

And yet...

here you are.

Welcome to Haven Woods.

The Host

The Hatter

She opened something she probably shouldn't have.

The Hatter discovered a passage into Haven Woods through a part of the story that was never meant to be read—the Unwritten Chapter.

Naturally, she decided it would make a wonderful place to host an event.

Since then, she has made herself quite comfortable among the forgotten stories, wandering creatures and Lost Pages of the Woods. She'll happily welcome travelers through the opening, introduce them to a few unusual residents and assure them that everything is perfectly under control.

It probably isn't.

She has an unfortunate habit of opening things clearly marked DO NOT OPEN.

And Haven Woods has never been quite the same.

Her Ward(en)

He came through the opening with her.
At least... that's what they think.

He carries keys he doesn't remember collecting.
Pages from stories he doesn't recognize.
And a lantern that seems to know the paths better than he does.

Unlike The Warden who belongs to Haven Woods, her Ward(en) is not the guardian of its stories or the protector of their endings. He is an outsider—someone who crossed through the opening with the Hatter.

Or so the story goes.

Because there is one small problem.

He doesn't remember his story.

The crows, however, seem to recognize him.

They follow him through the Woods, perch nearby and whisper things he doesn't understand. Whether they're watching him, guiding him or waiting for him to remember something remains unclear.

For now, he stays close to the Hatter.

Perhaps because she is the one thing he remembers.

Or perhaps...

he's making sure she doesn't open anything else.

TWO CHOSEN BY OLD HAVEN

Old Haven did not choose the oldest.
He did not choose the strongest.
And he did not choose the wisest.

He chose the smallest.

Too young to twist the truth.
Too innocent to decide that one version of a story is better than another.
And willing to listen when the Woods speak.

Old Haven entrusted him to the Storyteller, where he listens, learns and begins to understand the tales of Haven Woods.

But the Storyteller is not his only teacher.

The trees speak to him, too.

For now, he may not understand why the stories they remember are sometimes different from the stories he has been told.

One day, he will.

Because Old Haven did not choose him simply to learn the stories.

He chose him so that one day...

he will write the stories correctly.

“Not everyone connected to Haven Woods walks its paths. Some have been chosen for what comes next.”

THE STORYTELLER’S SUCCESSOR

Chosen to remember what is true.

THE KEY MASTER

Chosen to know when something should be opened.

Haven Woods has many doors.

Some can be seen.
Some are hidden.
And some do not appear until the Woods decide they are needed.

Old Haven entrusted the Key Master with the keys to forgotten places, hidden paths and unwritten chapters.

But possessing a key does not mean something should be opened.

So he listens.

To the trees.
To the Woods.
And most of all...

to Old Haven.

He does not need to know what waits behind every door.

He only needs to recognize when the time has come for one to open.

Until then, the keys remain with him.

The paths remain hidden.

And whatever waits on the other side...

waits.

Because the Key Master was not chosen simply to carry the keys.

He was chosen to know...

when it is time to unlock the way.

“One has been entrusted with what should be remembered.
The other with what should be opened.
Old Haven chose them both.”
